A serious accident involving multiple tractor trailers and other vehicles has kept Route 84E between Port Jervis and Greenville closed for much of today, Tuesday, December 26.
As many travelers were returning home after yesterday's Christmas Day celebrations, or back to work, heavy fog and low visibility covered much of the Tri-State region and higher elevations of Route 84. The fog was noted as a possible contributing factor, but the cause of the accident was not available for release as of this afternoon.
A huge traffic jam between the affected exits existed for several hours, as well as delays on alternate routes. The affected section of Route 84E from Port Jervis to Greenville remained closed as of late afternoon today, Tuesday.
Multiple police, fire, and ambulance units, along with many tow trucks, responded to the accident scene near mile marker 4.7, just past the Greenville exit. Early reports advised of seven patients in need of medical help, shortly after the accident occurred, which was around 10:20 a.m. today. Fortunately, no injuries were believed to be life-threatening.
Vehicles reported to be involved in the accident included several tractor trailers, including one that had been transporting a home. However, the number of vehicles actually involved was not immediately known.
Traffic remained backed up for several hours, with many motorists stuck in their cars during those hours and 84E area between Greenville (Mile Marker 4.7) into Pennsylvania. For a time, westbound 84 was also closed in order to allow traffic to finally have a means to exit. As of mid-afternoon 84 Westbound was open and 84E traffic in the affected stretch of roadway was diverted to alternate routes.
Motorists, as always, are advised to slow down during times of reduced visibility or inclement weather, keep their vehicle lights on, and take precautions to travel safely in all conditions.
