PORT JERVIS, NY – There’s still time to support Port Jervis Rotary Club’s Flags for Heroes program, which is hoping to continue filling the lot at the corner of East Main Street and Sullivan Avenue with the beauty of America’s flag.
Flags for Heroes raises funds that are 100 percent used to fund scholarship for local graduating seniors. This program allows anyone to salute a hero or heroes in their life, or anywhere. It also allows for Rotary fundraising to assist students with often overwhelming costs of college.
Rotarian Debbie Valentine, who helped launch this national project locally several years ago and continues as an organizer annually, said names of contributors and their heroes will be printed in a special program booklet. Personalized waterproof medallions will also be provided.
“The more we collect, the more we can help students with tuition costs. Many end up in debt just paying for their college educations. We want to help as much as possible,” Valentine said. “People also love seeing the flags and honoring their heroes.”
This Saturday, June 1, at 12 noon, a dedication of the flags will take place at the corner lot flag display site.
Valentine said she is continuing to add new names to the program list for as long as possible up to this June 1 date. Even if it becomes too late to list a last-minute sponsorship, medallions will be provided, every flag will be displayed, and support can continue for this Rotary scholarship program.
Sponsorship forms are contained in a display box on the East Main Street section of the corner lot. An email address and sponsorship information are listed on the form, which may be completed and submitted.
The Rotary thanks all who continue to support this program each year, as well as those taking part for the first time.
Flags will be displayed from May 1-July 8.
