MEDIEVAL MONSTERS AND GOSSIPING TOWNSFOLK, PORT JERVIS CONSORT PERFORMS MENOTTI’S “THE UNICORN, THE GORGON AND THE MANTICORE"

PORT JERVIS, NY --

"THERE ONCE LIVED A MAN IN A CASTLE, AND A STRANGE MAN WAS HE."

Thus begins The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore, a work by Gian Carlo Menotti for Madrigal chorus, instrumental ensemble and dancers.

Based on Medieval lore with a modern twist, this work provokes great humor while invoking a serious and timely message. An eccentric old man parades around with various outlandish beasts, scandalizing the pretentious wealthy townsfolk. The townsfolk, frantic to keep up with the latest fashions and defend their social status, deride and defame the old man, finally resorting to mob violence. But his “monsters” are revealed to be much more than they seem.

The Port Jervis Consort, an ensemble of singers and instrumentalists, join forces with the Dance Center of Port Jervis and local visual artists and designers to present this stunning work on Sunday, November 9 at 6 PM at the R.H. Smith Mercantile, 22 Jersey Ave. in Port Jervis.

The audience will be surrounded and sometimes intertwined with performers utilizing both the ground level and mezzanine of the R.H. Smith Mercantile, which has been called “a work of art in and of itself.”

The performance will appeal to young and old and is free of charge. For information or to join the growing Port Jervis Arts email network, contact: (845) 858-9895 or portjervisarts@gmail.com.
