PORT JERVIS, NY -- There was something for everyone during Port Jervis' 32nd Annual Fall Foliage Festival, as presented by the city's Tourism Board yesterday. The festival took place in an expansive area of the city's historic downtown business district throughout Sunday, September 28.
Tourism Board members Niki Jones and Laura Meyer each estimated the event to have drawn more than 20,000 visitors during the 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. event. The fall weather was season-perfect as vendors, entertainers, and festival-goers enjoyed strolling through the downtown area during the day.
Meyer said over 200 vendors participated this year, offering diverse items, information, and fun. The curb-lined booths offered handmade items, public service information, fall and holiday crafts, baked goods, and so much more. A petting zoo and pony rides at one end of the festival area was a popular spot for families throughout the day. One Direction Band, along with other musicians -- including Port Jervis' Broome Street Band -- performed well-known hits in various areas of the downtown. Vintage vehicles lined an area of Ball Street, and food booths were situated throughout the downtown.
Vendors spoken with during the event, and others who posted on social media during and after the festival, said they were very pleased with the day's results and personally enjoyed the day. One, the always-popular Mount Carmel Society with their grilled sausage and pepper sandwiches, was sold out as the event was coming to a close. Longtime members of the group said they prepared and sold even more than last year, which was also stated by several other repeat food vendors.
"People were spending, and really enjoying themselves," one vendor said. "We can't wait to come back next year! It's always a good time."
Jones noted that not only was the festival able to draw local people, but also visitors from other communities for the day. Many asked about future events they would like to attend. Both Jones and Meyer said they are glad to be able to help spotlight all that Port Jervis has to offer.
Jones said plans are underway for the return of already popular annual events, as well as ideas being considered for possible new ones. She said she has one idea she plans to bring up to the board and research as a possibility for November.
Meanwhile, a heartfelt thank you from the Port Jervis Tourism Board was shared first thing Monday morning.
